House Passes Equality Act

Bill had faced significant opposition.

In a 224-206 vote, the House of Representatives passed the Equality Act on Friday. The legislation separates biological sex from so-called gender identity, prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, and other services.

The bill faced significant opposition. The House Freedom Caucus called the bill an attack on women’s rights, women’s sports, and religious freedom. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia said, “it’s not about stopping discrimination, it is creating it.” Representative Jody Hice of Georgia said the name of the bill is deceptive because what it creates is “anything but equality.” Congressman Chip Roy of Texas said the Act violates religious freedom.

Representative David Cicilline of Rhode Island, who introduced the bill, stated that the threat of transgender women in sports is “a non-existent issue.”

The bill now goes to the Senate where it would need 60 votes in order to pass. President Biden has said the Act is a priority for his administration in his first 100 days in office.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of the Senate when the Equality Act comes to the floor.
  • That God would work His will in this nation and return the hearts of Americans and their leaders to Him.
