Allison Herren Lee
Acting Chair, Securities and Exchange Commission
Allison Herren Lee received her undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado. She earned a Juris Doctor at the University of Denver College of Law. She engaged in the private practice of law focusing on securities, antitrust, and commercial litigation.
She served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney and was a member of the American Bar Association’s former Committee on Public Company Disclosure.
Lee has served in various roles at the Securities and Exchange Commission over a decade, including counsel to one of the commissioners, and as Senior Counsel in the Division of Enforcement’s Complex Financial Instruments Unit.
She was appointed by President Donald Trump and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate in June 2019 to fill a vacancy on the SEC, where she is currently the acting Chair, having been so designated by President Joe Biden in January 2021.

The Securities and Exchange Commission plans to allow more enforcement supervisors to authorize Wall Street investigations, permitting about 36 senior officials to subpoena companies and individuals for records or testimony.
“Returning this authority to the division’s experienced senior officers, who have a proven track record of executing it prudently, helps to ensure that investigative staff can work effectively to protect investors,” SEC acting chairman Allison Herren Lee said.
The agency had previously withdrawn that authority from supervisors and allowed only two officials to approve new probes, saying it would result in more consistent decisions about which tips and complaints justified investigations. The number of new investigations fell from 1,063 in 2016 to 827 in 2019, the last year of figures published by the SEC. Completed enforcement actions likewise fell.
