On Monday evening, the Senate voted to confirm Janet Yellen as the nation’s first woman to serve as Treasury Secretary. She had bipartisan support in an 84-15 vote. She had drawn unanimous support in a Senate confirming committee on Friday.
She has previously served as the chair of the Federal Reserve and on the White House Council of Economic Advisers.
She is expected to help guide President Biden’s proposed $1.9 trillion relief package through Congress. The package contains another wave of stimulus checks, federal unemployment benefits, vaccine distribution funds, and aid to state and local governments.
