I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand. – Deuteronomy 32:39
On August 5, 2010, 33 Chilean miners were trapped 2,300 feet underground in a copper and gold mine just outside of a small town called Copiapó. A cave-in confined the men with no way out. They were imprisoned in a fortress of rock. For more than two weeks, rescuers heard nothing from the trapped miners. The men couldn’t even help each other out of this pit. They were helpless and desperate, hungry and cold. But the miners gathered and called on the God Most High to rescue them.
Finally, after 17 days, rescuers found a note taped to one of their drill bits. The miners were alive! The rescuers drilled a larger hole down through the earth, inserted a small tube, and provided the miners with food, water, medicine, and communication equipment. After 69 days, all the miners were finally freed when a two-foot-wide capsule lifted them out one at a time.
El Elyon is the name that designates God as the sovereign ruler of the universe. It was El Elyon, “God Most High, who has delivered” Abraham’s enemies into his hand. It was God Most High who was and is the Redeemer of Israel. It is God Most High who rules today over the issues of this nation. And when your circumstances seem to have caved in on you and you see no escape, it is God Most High who will rescue you out of a seemingly hopeless situation.
Thank your Heavenly Father that nothing can happen in His universe without His permission. Allow that truth to strengthen your faith as you spend time with Him. Pray that America’s leaders will do the same.
Today’s Verse: Deuteronomy 32:39
See now that I, even I, am he,
and there is no god beside me;
I kill and I make alive;
I wound and I heal;
and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.

And Hannah prayed and said,
“My heart exults in the Lord;
my horn is exalted in the Lord.
My mouth derides my enemies,
because I rejoice in your salvation.
2 “There is none holy like the Lord:
for there is none besides you;
there is no rock like our God.
3 Talk no more so very proudly,
let not arrogance come from your mouth;
for the Lord is a God of knowledge,
and by him actions are weighed.
4 The bows of the mighty are broken,
but the feeble bind on strength.
5 Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger.
The barren has borne seven,
but she who has many children is forlorn.
6 The Lord kills and brings to life;
he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
7 The Lord makes poor and makes rich;
he brings low and he exalts.
8 He raises up the poor from the dust;
he lifts the needy from the ash heap
to make them sit with princes
and inherit a seat of honor.
For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,
and on them he has set the world.
9 “He will guard the feet of his faithful ones,
but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness,
for not by might shall a man prevail.
10 The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces;
against them he will thunder in heaven.
The Lord will judge the ends of the earth;
he will give strength to his king
and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
