Department raising public awareness of ID requirement with October 1, 2021 deadline.
The Department of Homeland Security launched the “Be Your REAL ID Self” public awareness campaign on Friday. The full federal enforcement of the REAL ID requirement will go into effect as of October 1, 2021. Acceptable alternatives to the REAL ID card include a U.S. Passport or passport card.
The REAL ID Act was recommended by a 9/11 Commission and was passed by Congress in 2005. The Act established “minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and prohibits federal agencies, like the Transportation Security Administration, from accepting licenses and identification cards for official purposes from states that do not meet these standards.”
The REAL ID standards incorporate security features to prevent counterfeiting and fraud. According to the DHS statement, “These standards have significantly improved the reliability and accuracy of state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards across the country.”
