Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. – Psalm 24:9
Picture a king and his army returning victorious from battle. As they approach the gates of their city, the heralds announce their arrival and the gates of the city are lifted, or opened wide, so the parade can march through in its glory.
Today’s Scripture written by King David is thought to be a rejoicing that the Ark of the Covenant was returning to Jerusalem. David’s love of the Lord causes him to honor Creator God who founded the earth “and established it upon the rivers” (Psalm 24:2). David continues, “Lift up your heads, O gates!” (Psalm 24:9) It’s as if he is encouraging the people to throw wide open the gates (open wide your hearts) and allow the King of Glory to come in. He’s telling them to make the Lord the object of their worship.
The Apostle Paul wrote that Christ “is the image of the invisible God… by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible” (Colossians 1:15-16). Christ the King is strong and mighty. It is Christ who won the battle over sin, death, and the devil as He died on the cross for the sin of the world. Christ was announced at His birth by a host of heavenly angels and has now entered the doors of Heaven as Savior and King (Luke 2:13-14; Psalm 24:10). He asks only that you believe.
Celebrate the birth of baby Jesus. Pray for revival in heart and mind, beginning with yourself and then for this nation, as each one contemplates the tiny Babe who is Christ, the King of Glory. Worship Him; He is Savior and worthy of your praise!
