Panel recommends use in emergencies.
The panel of advisers to the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of recently developed vaccines for emergency use in a 17-4 vote. Although the quick turnaround of these vaccines does come with some risks, the panel signaled that the FDA finds their benefits for adults recovering from COVID-19 to outweigh their possible negative side effects.
The acting chair of the advisory committee, Dr. Arnold Monto, held a public meeting last Friday to advocate for the effectiveness of the vaccines and to answer any questions the public may have. Although questions about allergies and data pools came up, Dr. Monto remained confident. “Unless there are surprises … there will not be an issue in terms of efficacy.”
