In the world, but not of the world
Jeremiah 29:7 – Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
Many years ago, the late Billy Graham said, “If we fail to solve this moral and spiritual crisis, we may be doomed like the great nations of the past.” Two centuries earlier, Edward Gibbon, in his treatise The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, cited five reasons for their failure. The undermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home which is the basis of human society (such as by a rapid increase in divorce); higher and higher taxes and overspending of public money; a mad craze for pleasure that became more extreme and brutal in order to be exciting; the building of gigantic monuments while ignoring the decadence of the populace; and the decay of religion, where there was form but no function. Do any of these have a familiar ring today?
As followers of Jesus Christ, it is often too easy to just say that you are pilgrims here. “This world is not my home; I’m just a-passin’ through.” Even so, In Jeremiah, God instructed His people to pray for the place where you are…so that it will go well for them, with a trickle down effect on you.
Pray With Us
Merciful and Loving God, You are our Lord and our King and we long for the day when You will receive us into Your Heavenly abode. Until then, we place this nation of America at your feet and ask that You might once again look upon us with favor. May we repent and begin once again to serve You. Yet, for the honor of Your holy name, we pray that Your will be done in this great land. Our confidence is in You. Blessed be Your Name in all the Earth, Amen.
- Pray for an America that seeks to find its way and remembers what was established by its founders.
- Pray for a renewed love for biblical principles in America’s lawmakers and courts.
- Pray that God would draw back to Himself those who have walked away from Him.
- Repent of self-centeredness within yourself in how you pray and think about God’s will for the nation.
- Pray that the Lord would send His Holy Spirit to urge His people to plead on behalf of the nation.
- Thank God that He has all authority in America
- Ask that God will lead and guide the discussions of Congress and the president’s Administration.
- Ask that you and others who name the name of Christ to be guided onto the path of peace and safety.
- Pray for a return to truth and unity.
