Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will make a historic visit to the Golan Heights and an Israeli settlement in the West Bank during a visit to Israel next week… firsts by a top American diplomat.
The international community considers both territories to be “illegally occupied” by Israel, though President Trump has recognized Israel’s sovereignty in the Golan Heights.
The secretary’s planned visit to the two sites appears to be intended to highlight the Trump Administration’s policy shifts regarding Israel. The visit follows the Administration’s recent decision to remove restrictions on U.S. investing in various projects being carried out in Israeli settlements.
