Do you not know? Do you not hear? Has it not been told you from the beginning? – Isaiah 40:21
It was a time of peace in Israel… but not for long. Babylon had seen the treasures of the land and would be back to conquer the people and carry them away. The prophet Isaiah lamented the things to come, for the judgment of God would be harsh because of Israel’s sins of idolatry, injustice, immorality, and total disregard of the messengers sent by God to warn the people.
In the midst of all of this, Isaiah would carry words of comfort to his people and a reminder of the greatness of their God. Bible commentator Warren Wiersbe identifies what he calls “four voices” that are heard in Isaiah’s message. There is a voice pardoning all iniquities; the voice of providence when the Lord fulfills His promise of the Messiah. The voice of promise is heard as Isaiah speaks of nations and leaders who fulfill their purposes and then fade away, “but the word of our God will stand forever.” Finally, there is the voice of peace – “Behold your God!” He will be like a shepherd, and “will gather the lambs in his arms… and gently lead those that are with young” (Isaiah 40:1-11).
On a scale of 1 to 10, how good is your hearing? Do you hear the message the Lord has for you? He is the Sovereign, Creator God to whom none can be compared. He is “the everlasting God” whose “understanding is unsearchable” (Isaiah 40:28). In light of all of this, know that He is the One in whom you can place all hope. Pray that His hand will be upon the election to come. Then know you need not fear as He works His plan.
