President Donald Trump’s schedule for the day has been canceled. On Thursday night, President Donald Trump announced that he and First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive for the coronavirus. Earlier Thursday evening, the president had stated that one of his close aides, Hope Hicks, tested positive for the coronavirus and that he and First Lady Melania Trump would begin the quarantine process while they awaited their test results.
Hope Hicks had traveled with President Trump aboard Air Force One to Cleveland for the debates on Tuesday, and to Minnesota for the rally the president held on Wednesday. Hope Hicks serves as a counselor to the president, reporting to Senior Advisor Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law. Hicks had worked in the press office of the Trump Corporation prior to being chosen as the presidential campaign press secretary in early 2015.
“The President takes the health and safety of himself and everyone who works in support of him and the American people very seriously,” said White House spokesperson Judd Deere. “White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting COVID-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the President is traveling.”
