Essence of Life

Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.‘”- John 7:38

That simple three-molecule construction, H2O, water, is the “most extraordinary life-sustaining molecule known to mankind.” So states the author of Water: The Essence of Life, Mark Niemeyer. You can know it as a solid, liquid, or gas. It can be ice, water, and steam.  It has great flexibility—it can flow, creep, drip, or crash. Scientists say that all the water that has ever existed on Earth is still here, recycling itself through stages of evaporation, condensation, and collection.

You require it to live.

When Jesus met the woman of Samaria at a water well in John 4, he told her about something far greater than water that was necessary for life. He was speaking of the very power of God that would quench her spiritual thirst. Later, when Jesus was in Jerusalem at the Feast of Tabernacles (in John 7), he cried out to anyone who would listen, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.” Then he spoke of the Holy Spirit being Living Water that would indwell those who would believe.

For you who have the Holy Spirit indwelling you today, how’s your spiritual water?  Are you frozen, unapproachable, silent? Are you the lukewarm kind that Jesus said he would spit out of his mouth in Revelation 3:16? Are you steamy, vaporous, impossible to pin down?  God wants you to be the most refreshing water possible to everyone you meet.

The next time you take a cool drink of that H2O, consider your spiritual life. Then pray that leaders across the nation who must make decisions on natural resources, including water, would stop and thank God for that life-giving essence, and seek to know the Source of all of it personally.

Today’s Verse: John 7:38

“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me. 34 You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”

37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So there was a division among the people over him. 44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
