When it seems God is silent.
Habakkuk 1:5 – Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.
It there is one statement that should bring reassurance from today’s verse it is this: God is still in control!
You look around and you listen to the news, and—if you are like many Christians these days—you decide how God should respond. But the truth has always been that God’s responses do not always make sense. But tremble and trust…those are the elements in the story of Habakkuk. In it, God recognizes the evil being done by His people and He calls them out, vowing heartbreak and disaster upon them. Habakkuk went to God, questioning Him. Not about the plan of God, but what to do about it. He admitted to the Lord that it wasn’t making sense.
But the lessons from Habakkuk are that you need not be paralyzed by fear, because God’s plans are always perfect. God wants you to wait on Him in patience. In the meantime, manage your life in the light of what you can see and what you can understand. Eventually, His plan will become visible. God can and does use evil people to further His purposes and he owes no explanation to anyone. But, be still, He says. His sovereignty is beyond question. Remain faithful to Him, in good times and bad, and don’t be overwhelmed by what may be ahead. God’s got you! “The righteous shall live by his faith” (Habakkuk 2:4). And that alone is astounding enough.
Pray With Us
Heavenly Father, I confess to being confused when I see things happen that I know you could step in and stop. Especially, Lord, my heart hurts when these things are so wrapped up in evil doings by evil-bent people. You ask me to trust Your plan. It’s hard, but it is everything that I want to do. You are my Sovereign Lord, and You will work everything according to Your Will. My faith in You is unwavering.
Amen and Amen… may it ever be so.
