Matthew 6:34 –Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Writer Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Worry looks around, faith looks up.” How much “looking around” have you done recently? Worry tends to cause us to ask the question What if…? What if I get sick? What if my kids don’t go back to school? What if they can’t find a vaccine for COVID? What if…?
Jesus spoke on this very subject while He was on Earth. Listen to His words in Matthew 6:
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore, do not be anxious saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matthew 6:25-34)
Asking all those “What if” questions will not add any time to your life, nor will it help change whatever situation you are currently in. There is no doubt that Americans are in a unique time, and that things can seem scary. But the next time you feel yourself start to worry, instead of asking “What if?” ask “How much more will God care for me?
Pray With Us
Wonderful Heavenly Father, You are so good. Thank You for always caring about me and providing for whatever I need. Help me stop worrying about whatever the future holds. Keep me focused on You, trusting that You will care for me, as You care for all Your creation. Teach me how to let go of what I cannot control. Thank you that I can always come to You to talk about anything.
Amen.
