Action taken under the Design Force 2030 Marine Corps plan.
The Marine Corps began shutting down its tank battalions in July. Two battalions in California have already held deactivation ceremonies. These divestments are being made under the Design Force 2030 plan set in place this past spring by General David Berger, Marine Corps Commandant.
The plan calls for the streamlining of the Marine Corps to better prepare for future action, including the defense of ships at sea and operations in contested areas near shore. Sophisticated anti-tank systems have complicated the contemporary utility of tanks. “For the future fight, [tanks] are of less value than the things that we need most, such as long-range precision fire,” said Lt. General Eric Smith of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For General Berger as he readies the Marine Corps for the future.
- For all Armed Forces personnel serving in harm’s way.
