Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. – Hebrews 4:16
It can be nerve wracking to be called into the presence of an authority figure, like a kid before a principal, a citizen before the president, or humans before heavenly beings. Several instances of the latter are included in the Bible, such as Daniel hitting the deck when an angel appeared (Daniel 10:9). John fell at the feet of the glorified Christ (Revelation 1:17). Even Mary was greatly troubled when approached by an angel (Luke 1:29).
Just think how marvelous it is when the writer of Hebrews says “with confidence, draw near to the throne of grace” as it says in today’s verse. You may have learned “boldly” from another translation. Just thinking about coming before God Himself may give you pause. The good news is that your good works, your prayers, your excellent behavior aren’t what allow you to come boldly before Him. Only the redemptive work Jesus did on the cross allows you such privilege.
Coming into His throne room is a privilege, a right, and a responsibility. It is a privilege because you didn’t earn it. It is a right because God has accepted you in Jesus and welcomed you into His family. It is a responsibility because, now that you have this privilege and right, God expects you to intercede for yourself, others and for those in authority. Place prayer on the top of your priorities. Remember to pray for the president and the nation during these difficult times, putting your hope and trust in Jesus, just as you do for your salvation.
