In the News…
China has engaged in a concerted effort to seed American colleges and universities with members of the People’s Liberation Army, according to federal officials who unveiled a raft of visa fraud cases.
“This is another part of the Chinese Communist Party’s plan to take advantage of our open society and exploit academic institutions,” Assistant Attorney General John Demers said. “We will continue to conduct this investigation together with the FBI.”
John Brown, a senior member of the FBI’s international security branch, added, “In interviews with members of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army in over 25 cities across the U.S., the FBI uncovered a concerted effort to hide their true affiliation to take advantage of the United States and the American people.”
The current and former military officials indicted on visa fraud studied topics ranging from neurology to artificial intelligence, the Justice Department said. Indictments have come on the heels of the State Department’s instruction that China vacate its consulate in Houston, a mandate that U.S. officials justified as a necessary step to “protect American intellectual property and Americans’ private information.”
Chinese officials have denied any wrongdoing.
