An Authentic Witness

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. – Matthew 5:14

Think of a place that stands as a high-point in its surroundings – a place that can be seen from afar to give guidance in direction, or comfort in knowing that it has a firm foundation. In the world today, technology is regarded so highly that it might be considered a transitory light in a dark world.

Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie, former Chaplain to the U.S. Senate, wrote that the purpose of the life of the Christian is to be a commanding witness for Jesus Christ. In a dark world, “what we believe, what Christ means to us, and what He has done in our character cannot be hidden.” The question today is whether or not you are the light that God expects you to be.

It is a tumultuous time in the history of this country. It is very evident that the dark forces of the devil have taken hold of the hearts of so many. It is not an easy time. God has called the believer to be a light… to speak softly and firmly of Jesus, to live a life that is dynamic in its reflection of the fruit of the Spirit even in the midst of persecution. As Ogilvie says, “Our challenge is to keep our minds filled with the truth of Christ and our emotions fired with the warmth of Christ, so that we will attract the people around us with His quality of life. There is no such thing as secret discipleship… Disciples cannot be hidden.”

Shine your light, believer! Don’t let the fear of what others may do hinder you. Be an authentic witness! Then pray for courageous leadership in the halls of government.

Today’s Verse: Matthew 5:14

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

1Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
