Department will continue ongoing conservation efforts in North Cascades.
The Interior Department announced this past week that it would not longer be continuing the controversial program of reintroducing grizzly bears into the North Cascade Ecosystem in Washington State. The reassessment of the plan began at the end of the Obama administration in 2015. The Interior received over 143,000 comments opposing the plan to bring back the apex predators.
Secretary Bernhardt explained the reasoning for the change of plans saying, “The Trump Administration is committed to being a good neighbor, and the people who live and work in north-central Washington have made their voices clear that they do not want grizzly bears reintroduced into the North Cascades. Grizzly bears are not in danger of extinction, and Interior will continue to build on its conservation successes managing healthy grizzly bear populations across their existing range.“
