President Donald Trump will remain in Washington, D.C. today, and will receive his intelligence briefing at the White House.
Concerns have been raised that Russian military intelligence has paid Taliban insurgents to kill U.S. troops in Afghanistan. The National Security Council prepared options earlier this spring in case intelligence developed to support briefing President Trump on responses to the possible threat.
Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on Monday, ”there is no consensus within the intelligence community on these allegations, and, in effect, there are dissenting opinions from some in the intelligence community with regards to the veracity of what’s being reported. And the veracity of the underlying allegations continue to be evaluated.”
Director Gina Haspel of the CIA also stated on Monday, ”Hostile states’ use of proxies in war zones to inflict damage on U.S. interests and troops is a constant, longstanding concern. CIA will continue to pursue every lead; analyze the information we collect with critical, objective eyes; and brief reliable intelligence to protect U.S. forces deployed around the world.”
