Philippians 2:14-16 – Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life.
Crooked and twisted generations (also called perverse in some translations) have existed across time. Many people used by God have had to face them down. Elijah had that experience in 1 Kings 18, where God did mighty things through him and his prayers. His mountaintop experience also put his life in jeopardy, and he ran and hid in a cave. In his travail, he said, “It’s enough. Take my life.” And “I’m all alone.” Certain signs of depression.
Christian psychologists will tell you that depression is not a character defect, an emotional dysfunction, or a spiritual disorder…nor is it a choice. Some of the greatest Christians have faced it. Many have sought professional help to deal with overcoming.
God had to remind Elijah that he was not alone. That there were thousands who, like him, refused to bow the knee to false gods. Let God help you, too. Seek help if you need it. You do not need to dwell in that “mental cave” forever.
Pray With Us
Merciful God, Thank You for the encouragements You give in Your Word…encouragements to bear up under rough times, reminders that I am not alone. Oh, Great Physician, bring healing to my mind when I slip into depressed moods. Guide me to appropriate individuals who can also help me. My faith is strong. Restore joy to me. In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
