In the wake of recent unrest, law enforcement reforms are front and center.
Senators and Representatives from both houses of Congress are looking to temper the call for defunding or disbanding police forces. Senator Bernie Sanders said he does not agree with abolishing police departments, but suggested better training, education, and compensation as important facets going forward.
Several members of the House of Representatives have also voiced the need for reforms in policing and are not in favor of the defunding police agencies. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi referred questions regarding the matter to the legislation the House has put forward which, while it promotes significant reforms, does not seek to reduce funding.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that the efforts to reform law enforcement agencies and add accountability is critical. He added, “[the American people] know that well-trained law enforcement officers are an important part of creating safe communities, not something to defund or abolish.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Congress as they seek to implement positive changes in the nation.
- For the members of committees and caucuses who determine directions legislators will take.
- For the Lord to heal the divisions and disturbances caused by racial injustice and the resulting unrest.
