President Donald Trump is traveling to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, today. He will observe the historic launch of SpaceX’s crewed capsule to the International Space Station. This will be the first time astronauts have launched from U.S. soil since 2011 with the end of the space shuttle program.
As part of the president’s push to reinvigorate the American space industry, he highlighted SpaceX as “American ingenuity at its best.” In conjunction with the formation of Space Force, he added that “our destiny, beyond the Earth, is not only a matter of national identity, but a matter of national security.”
Vice President Mike Pence, who is also the chairman of the National Space Council, will be in attendance with the president.
Doug Hurley and Robert Behnken, veteran NASA astronauts, will be aboard the rocket.
