God’s Way

God is light and in him is no darkness at all. – 1 John 1:5

What is it about the dark that brings fear into a young child at bedtime? When things go bump in the night, why is it more frightening than during the daylight hours? Darkness can be foreboding; it gives no clue as to what might be hiding around the corner, the danger that lies ahead.

When there was no life, no anything, there was darkness – a nothingness. But then “God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light; and He declared that the light was good” (Genesis 1:3). References in Scripture to light are positive and uplifting; the darkness is quite the opposite. Light symbolizes purity, holiness, wisdom, and perfection. Darkness holds misery, sinfulness, ignorance, and corruption.

Every day there is a reminder that the world is in darkness; people stumble because they don’t know the Lord. John’s message is clear: “God is light and in him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). His Word provides a lamp for their feet, and the light for their path (Psalm 119:105). John proclaims the truth of Christ—of God. From this, he bases his conclusions regarding the life and conduct of the Christian. Your heavenly Father demands a pure and holy life, a fellowship based on faith in Him, but only possible when you derive continual power and life from the God of light.

Pray fervently for wisdom to do His will. Plead for God’s saving grace for those in this nation who strive under their own power, in their own direction, and in total darkness. Pray the light of God to illuminate the halls of government through those who love and serve Him His way.

Today’s Verse: 1 John 1:5

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

12 I am writing to you, little children,
because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake.
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.
I write to you, children,
    because you know the Father.
14 I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
    because you are strong,
and the word of God abides in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
