1 Thessalonians 5:11 – Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
One of the businesses that was considered essential during the coronavirus shutdown was construction. That in part explains why the “big box” stores were open while local boutiques were closed down.
Building projects are often not in a place where a shutdown could easily occur. And what they did to contribute to the economy and maintaining jobs was important.
God desires that you be in the construction business also—by building up one another. You know what it is like when you receive an encouraging word or an unexpected act of kindness. Someone cared and felt you were valuable! You also can become crestfallen when the people around you are negative and complaining. Even in times of stay-at-home orders and self-isolation or quarantine, people still need people to come alongside them to offer them gentle and encouraging words.
Who needs your building up today? A simple phone call is a good beginning.
When faced with an enemy he didn’t know how to fight, Elijah reminded his servant of God’s angelic army. “Do not be afraid for those who are with us are more than those who are with them” (2 Kings 6:16). Psalm 91:11 reminds you that God has “commanded his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” And if angels aren’t enough, the Lord Himself is with you through His Holy Spirit who “is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
Pray With Us
Holy God, I confess that during these past months I have been preoccupied with myself and my family. I have not reached out. Yet I know there are people who are lonely, people who are suffering. Forgive me for just standing by and doing nothing. With Your help, Lord God, I want to begin a new construction project today, by building up those I know need a touch of encouragement. Help me resist complaining and negativity and consider the hope I have in You and the faith I hold that You are doing a mighty work even in these days. I praise You and thank You for loving us all so much.
Amen.
