“Important clinical advancement” cleared with “lightning speed.”
The intravenous drug developed by Gilead Science had shown in group studies to reduce COVID-19 hospitalization from a 15 day average to an 11 day average. Although further testing is required to study and refine the drug for full clearance in the future, the Food and Drug Administration cleared the drug on Friday for emergency use on severely diseased patients.
President Trump and the CEO of Gilead Science gave the announcement together at the White House on Friday. The response from the scientific community has been tentative but positive. “I don’t think this is a cure yet, but I think it’s starting to point us in the right direction,” said critical care specialist Dr. Sameer Khanijo. “As a society it’s nice to have something that will help stem the tide of this disease.”
