Relaxing on the guidelines could bring a second wave of the virus.
Dr. Deborah Birx, the coordinator for the White House’s coronavirus task force, said that, although the coronavirus curve may be showing signs of flattening, which some call “early signs of hope,” it is important that Americans not let their guard down yet or a second wave of the virus could occur.
“What’s really important is that people don’t turn these early signs of hope into releasing from the 30 days to stop the spread—it’s really critical,” she said. “If people start going out again and socially interacting, we could see a very acute second wave very early.”
She credited Americans for working hard to follow the national guidelines, but cautioned that different locations in the nation have different levels of the disease. Washington state and California have curves that “look like they are persistently flat, and that’s very encouraging for us.” In New York and New Jersey, the numbers seem to be stabilizing, she added, which also “gives us great encouragement.” But other areas are still struggling, like Chicago, Detroit and New Orleans.
Dr. Birx would not say whether the additional 30 days of social distancing put into place through April 30 will be sufficient or if it will need to be extended.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For the American populace to continue to abide by stay-at-home or self-isolation rules until they are lifted by the appropriate authorities.
- For each person to look not only to his or her own wellbeing, but to the wellbeing of their neighbors (Philippians 2:4).
