Peace Within

When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. – Psalm 94:19

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Charles Dickens may have lived in the early 1800s, but his words reflect the feelings of many right now in the 21st century. When the uncertainty of March has carried into the month of April, there are many who are panicky, unsure of job or health, and just plain fearful. If your life has some unplanned complications, maybe you feel unrest in your mind and body. That makes the verse for today that much more meaningful.

When the cares of your heart are many, there can still be joy and peace in your being. There may be confusion and strife around you, but you can be strong and calm. If the coronavirus outbreak has not caused unity of spirit in the halls of government, the tension of insecurity will most likely be felt across the vast expanses of the nation. It is up to you, the children of God, to show that there is no need to be tossed to and fro by conflicts without; you have a peace within that will carry you through any storm. It may not be easy; it may result in loss. But keeping your eyes on the eternal rather than the temporal will keep you focused on what is most important.

Let the words and actions of those seeking election in November be a guide to knowing their self-centeredness or their care for this nation. If words cause strife and agitation between groups of people, be careful. If they speak to incite fear, resist. God is still in control. Be wise. Pray unceasingly and seek His will.

    your consolations cheer my soul.

17 If the Lord had not been my help,
    my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence.
18 When I thought, “My foot slips,”
    your steadfast love, O Lord, held me up.
19 When the cares of my heart are many,
    your consolations cheer my soul.
20 Can wicked rulers be allied with you,
    those who frame injustice by statute?
21 They band together against the life of the righteous
    and condemn the innocent to death.
22 But the Lord has become my stronghold,
    and my God the rock of my refuge.

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
    let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
    let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God,
    and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
    the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
    let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
