An Overflowing Cup

Psalm 23:5My cup overflows.

In many fine restaurants, coffee cups are placed upside down on their saucer. If you want coffee, you turn your cup right side up, and an alert waitperson will soon fulfill your desire for the strong brown brew. In this time of national crisis, it seems too many people are living with their cups left upside down…spiritual cups that God wants to fill.  A chorus that used to be sung and heard on the radio more than now says, “Fill my cup, Lord; I lift it up, Lord; come and quench this thirsting of my soul.”  When you do that, Jesus answers that He came to give you an abundant life (John 10:10).

But God’s plan is not that you be satisfied with the water of life that He gives, but that you let your cup overflow to benefit others. With an overflowing cup, not only do you have enough, you have more than enough. With an overflowing cup, you have an excess of joy in the Lord, an extravagance of His favor, a bounteous profusion of blessings!  The Lord doesn’t intend for you to hoard His gifts, but to share them.

But at these times of “social distancing,” what can you do?  A telephone call to a frightened, self-isolating person; an offer to do your neighbor’s shopping while you are out doing your own; an unused board game from your cupboard given to the mother staying home with children who would rather be in school; a shared email prayer—all can come from your overflowing cup. Check your abundance. You’ll find more.  “If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself,’ you are doing well” (James 2:8).

Pray With Us

God, You are the Awesome Giver of so many good gifts, You have filled my cup to overflowing more than once. Guide me today to someone who needs what I can provide out of my “overflow.” Help me look not to just myself and my situation, but to the needs of another that I can meet. You are a good, good Father, and I trust in Your provision. Let me radiate that to my neighbor, today, I pray in Jesus Name,

Amen.
