Choosing a Side

If this is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God. – Acts 5:39

Would you say you are known more for what you support or what you oppose?  In a culture heavily charged along political lines, it’s easy to fall into situations where friendly conversation turns into debate and division, even among friends. How can faithful followers of Christ navigate election year politics with grace?

To start, be clear about where both your sense of civic responsibility and your spiritual life are drawn.  “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God” (Romans 13:1). Don’t fall into the trap of thinking God is on one political side or the other. He is on His own side calling out to all peoples and nations who will serve Him. “Righteousness exalts a nation, and sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). True faith is always demonstrated in good works.  Make sure you support those already making the world a better place, not those merely making popular promises.  “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?” (James 2:14). Remember, your best contribution to the health of your nation is in using your spiritual energy in prayer.  Ask God for discernment in pledging support to candidates best reflecting Biblical values “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan” (Proverbs 29:2).

This election season stay out of political arguments and ask God to bless America with public servants who will honor Him.  Quality time in prayer will insure you find yourself on God’s side.

    and kind in all his works.
18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,
    to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
    he also hears their cry and saves them.
20 The Lord preserves all who love him,
    but all the wicked he will destroy.
21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
    and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.
